Les crevasses foisonnent de miniatures hérétiques (Extrait)

LES CREVASSES FOISONNENT DE MINIATURES HÉRÉTIQUES
NTSC, coul., français, sous-titrage en français
7 min. 33 sec., 2012-2013
Distribution :

CREVASSES ABOUND OF HERETIC MINIATURES

In this fictionalized autobiography, a childlike voiceover portrays with an ingenuous but also acerbe tone the world that surrounds her. In between Alpine traditional songs, images from archives and pictures of zany DIY mini sculptures and drawings, the viewer is caught in a dense collage that blends intimate, local and national histories. Taboos about family, relationships, sexuality, race, French colonial war in Algeria, classism and white privilege are addressed by the naive questions of the narrator.

These questions reflect on a social landscape that has been damaged by ignorance and violence.  Les crevasses foisonnent de miniatures hérétiques / Crevasses abound of heretic miniatures is an unlikely slideshow that underlines stereotypes embedded in the everyday language of history in order to debunk them.

With child-like logic, Dauverné unmasks the adult world as one mixed up, messed up place. A land where unbridled colonialism is both an historical condition and a pernicious constant experienced by Indigenous peoples. A world where racism is both casual and devastating, a place where sex is scary, painful and potentially deadly, where neither « Arabs « nor « homos » are allowed in the house. Yet the young voice continues to try to piece it all together : the alcoholic uncle, perhaps the one who served in Algeria, the grandfather who is fragile at the death of his wife, then too mean to hug and finally dead himself. This jumble of experiences careens along with Dauverné’s deft hand at the tiller, no shore in sight but a ride that is part wonder and part madness. A condition very much like childhood itself.
